Nantucket Basket is a pure white sculpted fine bone china pattern that was inspired by the meticulous hand crafted baskets of Nantucket, Massachusetts, from the late 19th century.

Nantucket baskets were originally made in the mid-1800s by lightship keepers off the coast of the tiny island of Nantucket, Massachusetts, to earn extra income for their families. Today the tradition of making these baskets is still very much alive and carrying a handcrafted Nantucket basket is quite a status symbol among East Coasters who have visited or summer on the island. Wedgwood's Nantucket pattern captures the heritage of these baskets and the tastefulness of New England's upper crust in a simple yet lovely dinnerware collection. This charming, pure white, oval butter dish measures 9 by 6-1/4 inches and features no more ornamentation than an embossed basketweave pattern around its rim. The removable oval lid is completely covered by the basketweave pattern in an authentic representation and is topped with a darling clamshell finial.

As with many Wedgwood collections, this dinnerware is made of fine bone china, which gives this dish a beautiful translucent sheen and makes it look quite thin and brittle. In spite of its delicate appearance, however, bone china is reinforced with 51-percent bone ash and is the strongest ceramic available. This modern-day china is safe for the microwave and dishwasher and is made in England with the same quality and care as earlier pieces from Wedgwood's 240 years of production. I am very pleased with my Nantucket bone china. I am using it on a daily basis as my "everyday dishes". The basketweave is elegant and the quality is superb, as you would expect from Wedgwood. I have been putting it in the dishwasher on the "normal" setting and it seems to be just fine. I have been admiring this pattern for many years, but held off since I already had a set of bone china. However, I'm thrilled to now be enjoying these at every meal. These pieces just have a great feel to them. They are a perfect fit for our home on the rocky coast of Maine! I inherited a full set of dishes in the Nantucket pattern and absolutely love them. I actually have used them more than my own Wedgwood china as they don't have gold on the rim and I can put them in the dishwasher. The butter dish does not disappoint either. You can add color to your table with flowers or linens. The white is classic and very New England.

Wedgwood quality is not what it used to be (no longer made in England) and probably not worth the price, but still this is a nice, basic dinner set. One of the bowls arrived smashed, probably due to heavy-handed delivery drivers. The set could have been packed better to avoid movement in the box and a fragile sticker applied to the outside box.
