Product Description

The Lift-Off Multi Cyclonic Pet vacuum provides 2 machines in 1, as it combines the best aspects of canister and upright vacuums into one effective, easy-to-store machine. To detach the canister, just “Press, Grab & Go.” The large rectangular button on the top of the canister releases it from the vacuum’s frame when pressed. Once you press, raise the carry handle and take the canister (without its heavy frame and floor brush) with you wherever you would like to clean. You can attach any of the tools to the hose, like the Pet TurboBrush Tool, and remove tracked-in dirt and pet hair from the places you can’t reach with your vacuum’s floor brush.

Unique Lift-Off feature and it cleans pet air well!

Unique Lift-Off feature and it cleans pet air well!
The basic Bissell vacuum I have had since college recently broke beyond repair, so my girlfriend and I needed a new vacuum. I went to a big-box store to check out the selection and ended up with this model. I wanted to go with a Bissell again because I had become familiar with how my old one worked and could easily take it apart to unclog or fix it if I needed to. Also, that vacuum lasted about seven years of regular use, so I got my money's worth (about $80 in 2005) and was sold on getting another Bissell. Here are my positives about this vacuum:1. The Lift-Off feature works well, and will be great to have to clean dog hair out of the car (my beagle loves car rides!).2. The brush has an auto-off feature for when the vacuum is fully upright to save your carpet. It also has a dedicated switch to shut off the brush if needed.3. The cord is the longest out of the other Bissells I saw at the store at 30 feet (compared to 27 and 25).4. If you are familiar with Bissells, this will not be much different. It has a spongy filter that you can hand clean, a replaceable HEPA filter in the back, and a replaceable belt on the bottom.5. It's easy to take apart and clean the canisters and filter.6. It comes with a decent assortment of attachments, like a telescoping tube, slim-ended tube, double-sided triangular brush, and a spinning pet hair brush. They all fit tightly and work well.7. It sucks, and it sucks with a good amount of force! My concerns:1. It's a bit heavier than the more basic models, basically because of the Lift-Off feature. In normal use, it glides easily across carpeting and doesn't feel cumbersome. Plus, it has the advantage of turning into a lighter vacuum if you need to to be more portable, like on stairs.2. I'm not sure of the durability of this model, as the Lift-Off feature is one more thing that could wear it out. Removing and replacing the whole thing seems a bit fragile, and after repeatedly doing so with the exposed socket prongs and clips that hold it to the vacuum frame, it might wear those parts out or even break them eventually. If you're not looking for really heavy duty usage though, and plan on detaching it just once per cleaning session, it should be fine.3. The brush is a bit narrower than some other vacuums at just 15" wide and the canister is slightly smaller than some others too. If you're cleaning a huge house, it might take you a while. If you have a small house or an apartment, you'll be fine.4. It runs rather warm. The air that gets pumped out of the back through the HEPA filter is almost hot; take care if you're vacuuming with shorts or a skirt on, and when you go to detach the tubes from the back with your hand.Other observations:1. From my experience with my other Bissell that lasted 7 years, I credit it lasting so long to religiously keeping it clean. The same should go for this model. Be sure to clean the cyclone chamber, the dirt cup, and the sponge filter after every one to three uses (depending on how much dirt and pet hair you pick up). Even more important to keep the motor running well, be sure to clear out long hair and strands of string/carpet out of the brush roller. Also keep an eye on the HEPA filter and replace it every so often as well (I usually did once a year).2. Belts are cheap! $3.29 for two from the big-box hardware store. A HEPA filter is about $13.Conclusion:If you're looking for a versatile vacuum to suck up pet hair and only need a light to medium duty vacuum for your modestly sized apartment/house, go ahead and get it! Just be sure to keep it clean and don't abuse it. (I will be sure to update this review in the future after more extensive use!)

Must-have features:
- Suction power. Great suction power.
- Lift-off feature. For use on stairs.
- Bagless.
- Dedicated on-off switch for brush. To vacuum wood floor without brush.
- Brush automatically turns off when unit is at upright position. Save brush and carpet wear-and-tear when using attachments.
- Furniture protection rubber guard.

Nice-to-have features, but not absolutely needed:
- Pet brush. "Pet" model means unit come with a Turbo Pet Brush attachment. Pet brush has rubber claws, which grab hair as you rake the surface of carpet or sofa. It is somewhat useful, but not to die for. Buy the Lift-Off models only if you want the must-have features. You can buy the Turbo Pet Brush attachment separately for $29.

Useless features (just marketing):
- Head light.

I was interested in buying the Bissell Lift-Off, but there is lack of info on the web to compare the 2 Bissell Lift-off models: Multiclylonic (89Q9) and Revolution. Rather than just a generic review, I will try to describe the difference between Lift-Off Revolution and Multicyclonic. Their sucking power seems similar. The visible differences are (1) dirt container, (2) upper tank right above the dirt container, and color.

(1) Dirt Container. Multicylconic and Revolution has different design. Small advantage to Multicyclonic. Multicylonic has 2 compartments; 1 cylinder in center and 1 large outer compartment. Revolution has single main compartment, plus 2 additional small dust chambers that extend out from chamber. I don't see any special impact or effect to the various compartments. But one thing I don't like on the Revolution is the 2 additional dust chambers with removable inserts, which are a mess to handle and clean.

The dirt container is the same size on both units. These units suck up so much hair and dust that the dirt containers need to be emptied after cleaning couple rooms. I have 2 short hair cats. The hair will clump together and rotate in the dirt container. As the container fills up (maybe 1/2 to 3/4 full), some hair will remain in the upper tank and not drop down into the dirt container.

(2) Upper tank. This is where the 2 units vary the most. Overall, I give the advantage to Multicyclonic, due to ease of cleaning, particularly with less hair trapped in upper tank. Revolution does have 1 added feature: upper tank can be removed, which is less messy to clean up.

- Upper tank filter size. Multicylonic has more open space in upper tank right above the dirt container. That means less likely for hair to get trapped. Revolution has large filter component that leaves a small gap to the compartment wall. Hair is more likely to get trapped. You can read the review for Revolution. And this is a major complaint for some users. Big advantage for Multicyclonic over Revolution here.

- Filter material. The upper tank on Multicylonic uses only plastic components, whereas Revolution has foam filter in upper tank. Both can be washed and rinsed out, but plastic is just easier and faster to clean. Another advantage for Multicyclonic.

- Removable upper tank on Revolution. The upper tank on Revolution is removable, but fixed on Multicyclonic. The positive for Revolution is that I can remove both upper tank and dirt container and empty them in the garbage can. On the Multicylonic, after bottom dirt container is removed, some remaining dust can drop down from the upper tank right onto the vacuum body.

Got this because our otherwise fantastic Dyson would simply not budge on Mohawk SmartStrand Silk (a well documented problem). Three stars because it does move at the higher height adjustments and the suction is decent. Unfortunately, the beater bar does not work well on this carpet. It spins fine on tile and "cheap" carpet, but spins sporadically (stop and go) on the Mohawk. So no four or five stars. If you have pets you are going to have to pull a lot of twisted hair, etc of the beater brushes pretty much after every major usage. Our is six months old.

UPDATE ---
I am sorry I never found time to update this review but I feel compelled to now.
I used this vacuum often for about seven months, thinking I was cleaning all the filters regularly. It worked fine, although the tipping (the entire vacuum when in use, and even the detachable canister when used alone) was extremely annoying when vacuuming under beds and furniture. After seven months the vacuum stopped working properly. It would get clogged, performance diminished significantly and it became very hard to clean the animal hair out of the upper chamber. I was very disappointed because I'd been very happy with the last two BisselI vacuums I've owned. I finally realized that for several months I had neglected to clean one of the filters! When I opened the filter holder it was choked with dust and animal hair. I thoroughly cleaned it but afterwards dust and animal hair continued to choke up this filter, even after the first use after a thorough cleaning. Animal hair really shouldn't have been able to get into this filter but I think I accidentally damaged the vacuum by not cleaning this filter for so many months. I doubt it was a design problem with the vacuum because it worked so well for several months. I never had a problem with my last two Bissell vacuums and I always remembered to regularly clean the filters. I've been very happy with Bissell and think most people would be but if you buy a Bissell, remember to regularly clean the filters for
best and long-lasting performance.

After researching and trying out several vacuums I learned there is no perfect machine that will make vacuuming fun for me. Yet this makes the task easier and less frustrating than some other vacuums. The lift-off feature is great for stairs and hard to reach places but it will tip over if set on the floor when cleaning underbeds.
The suction is great on rugs, bare floors and through the tools..
The dirt cup holds a lot but emptying it before it's full keeps things working better. The cup and filters are easy to remove and clean/replace.
After only a few uses I had to re-tighten the one screw that holds the handle on. Hopefully that won't become a recurring problem.
This vacuum is not light but it's not tiring to push around and can more easily be carried up and down stairs in two trips, if needed --- by detaching the lift-off part first.

First off the packaging was terrible. The top of the origional box had been cut off and a cardboard box taped over that to keep the items from falling out. Must have sent me someone elses return or a demo or something. In fact if I would have been home when Fed-Ex dropped it off I would have refused it just on the way the box looked.
Anyway put it together and tried it out on carpet, bare floors, and couches. It does an adequate job on carpet, however it does not get close enough to baseboards. My old $50 Bissell from Wal Mart gets closer. Suction on hard wood floors was ok, not great as one would expect. Upolstery: The powered attachment is next to worthless. A wet paper towel picks up more pet hair and quicker.
The detachable canister is nice for stairs, but again the suction seems to be lacking.
All in all I think I would have been further ahead just buying another $50 Bissell without all the bells and whistles gimicks since this "pet" model isn't any better than the standard model.

The vacuum works pretty well but is a bit bulky and less than easy to move around objects at times. Our first one came with a cracked dirt canister but the replacement was intact. Ok for the price I guess but would likely go with a canister style vacuum next time.
