About the authors
William D. Bowman is a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Director of the Mountain Research Station, and Fellow in the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Research in his lab focuses on multiple areas of plant ecology, primarily on the interactions between plants and their resources, ranging from plant adaptations to low resource availability, to how plants influence soils and subsequently ecosystem function and biodiversity. He received a BA from the University of Colorado, an MA from San Diego State, and his PhD from Duke University.
Sally D. Hacker is a Professor at Oregon State University, Corvallis, where she has been a faculty member since 2004. She has taught courses in introductory ecology, community ecology, and marine biology. She is particularly interested in promoting active and experiential learning for students interested in ecology and field experiences. Dr. Hacker’s research explores the structure, function, and services of natural and managed ecosystems under varying contexts of species interactions and global change. She has conducted research with plants and animals in rocky intertidal, estuarine, and coastal dune ecosystems. Her work has most recently focused on the protective role of coastal ecosystems in mitigating the vulnerability from climate change. In addition to the textbooks, Ecology (OUP/Sinauer) and Life: The Science of Biology (MacMillan/Sinauer), she is author or coauthor on numerous articles and book chapters exploring themes in coastal community ecology and ecosystem functions and services.

**Word or warning-when it says loose leaf it means a non-binded book that arrives held together by rubber bands. However, you can just buy a binder for it and all is well.

I purchased looseleaf because it offered cost savings, but it's really really not worth the hassle of trying to keep it together and in decent condition for resale.
